Book Review - Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer

Last night I stumbled onto the movie trailer for the new Disney movie Artemis fowl. Now if my guess is correct, there's a good chance you have not heard about Artemis fowl. Because honestly, nobody I talk to knows about him. But I stumbled onto this book series more than a decade ago when I was delivering pizzas. I used to listen to audiobooks in my car and I enjoyed fiction books from the youth section because they were clean and easy. Artemis Fowl fits this listening habit and there are eight books in the series!

The Artemis Fowl 8 Book Series

My entire family loves the Artemis Fowl series and we're so excited that Disney is creating a movie from the first book! There's lots of potential with this series! I just hope Disney does a good job keeping true to the story.

So let's review the story of Artemis fowl.

Artemis is a young boy who lost his father because of a bad business deal. His father was once the head of a criminal empire but after changing his life and going clean, a last job went bad and he disappeared.

At the young age of 12, Artemis assumes his father's responsibilities to take care of his family.  Being a young genius, he develops a plan to renew his father's criminal empire and keep his family prosperous.

Artemis Looks For The World Of FairiesSince he's young, and perhaps naive, he looks into fairy lore. He hopes to open up the truth about fairies and their world so he can use their power and technology to grow rich. But Artemis is in for more that he bargains for.

With the help of his faithful bodyguard, Butler, Artemis delves into the world of fairies below the Earth's surface. He successfully steals technology from the fairies but an all-out war is declared on the Fowl family. The fairies want their technology back and they aren't stopping for anything.

Fairies don't want the world to know that they exist. Fairies fear humans, because humans are dirty, lazy and have taken over the world. Fairy history has proven that humans and faires cannot live together, so the fairies escaped to the safety beneath the crust of the Earth. If their true existence and location were revealed, they would be in danger and could be eliminated. This cannot happen.

Eoin Colfer is the author of Artemis fowl. His book introduces some wonderful characters.

  1. Artemis Fowl is a cocky boy genius.
  2. His butler, 'Butler', is the ultimate bodyguard/super spy. Nobody and nothing can defeat Butler.
  3. Then there's captain Holly Short from the LEP RECON fairy police unit. If you read that correctly, you'd call her a 'leprechaun'. Holly is the one that ends up coming after Artemis. She's an ultra determined fairy who wants to do big things. Unfortunately Artemis is in her way.
  4. Then there's Commander root. He's in charge of the LEP police force. He has the classic police chief temper. Add in a sense of humor and he's a fun character.
  5. Foaly the centaur is the LEP officer in charge of fairy technology. He's the ultra computer nerd that knows everything and develops everything. Our modern technology is stone age compared to his.
  6. My favorite character is Mulch Diggums. He's a kind of fairy mole who can dig underground. His genetic nature gives him super abilities like ultra-sensitive fur and whiskers. He can swallow anything, dig almost anywhere and even stick to and climb almost anything. That means he can go just about anywhere. That's probably why he's in the fairy jail when we first meet him. He's a fairy thief who turns out to be a a whole lot of fun.

I highly recommend you to check out the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer! It's a fun and fast paced young adult book series.

Enjoy it! Batman out of here...

Now, regarding Disney's movie. In the past when I see a movie after reading it's book, there is usually a bit of disappointment An author can pack a ton of information into a story and only a small portion of it can fit into a 2-hour movie. We'll see how Disney performers with their version. Until then, why not check out Artemis Fowl! The odds are you'll find it at your local library. It's also available on Kindle, Audible and at your local book store. (The audiobook versions are wonderful.)

Your whole family will love the Artemis Fowl stories!
